What is a business day?
A business day is a day when businesses are normally open: Monday to Friday, not counting public holidays. Business days set deadlines for payments, shipping, contracts and notice periods, and they are how most employers count time off.
How to count business days
Business days = calendar days − weekend days − holidays on weekdays
Take October 2026 as an example. It has 31 calendar days, of which 9 fall on a weekend, leaving 22 weekdays. Columbus Day on Monday, October 12 takes one more off, so October 2026 has 21 business days.
To add business days to a date, step forward one day at a time and only count the days that are worked. Five business days after a Wednesday is the Wednesday of the next week, or the Thursday if a holiday falls in between.

How this calculator counts
- Holidays are the 11 US federal holidays. When one falls on a Saturday it moves to Friday, and on a Sunday it moves to Monday. State holidays and company closures are not included.
- A holiday that lands on a day off is not counted twice. It is counted with the days off.
- When adding business days, the start date is not counted, so one business day after a Friday is the next Monday.
- To see how much leave an employee builds up over those days, use the PTO accrual calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
+
A business day is any day an organization is normally open, which in the US means Monday to Friday, excluding federal holidays. Weekends and public holidays are not business days. Banks, courts and government agencies all use this definition.
How many business days are in 2026?
+
There are 250 business days in 2026 in the US: 261 weekdays minus 11 federal holidays.
Is Saturday a business day?
+
Not usually. In the US, business days are Monday to Friday. Some industries, like retail or shipping, also work Saturdays, so contracts sometimes define their own business days. Change the work days in the calculator to match.
Do you count the start date when counting business days?
+
It depends on what you are counting. For time off, both the first and last day are taken, so count both. For deadlines such as “within 5 business days”, the count usually starts the day after, so leave out the start date. The calculator has a checkbox for each.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
+
For federal employees and most employers, a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. The calculator uses these observed dates.
How long is 10 business days?
+
Without holidays, 10 business days is exactly two calendar weeks: 14 days counting the weekends in between. If a holiday falls in that period, it takes one more day for each holiday.
